Short answer: a split AC is the right choice if you own the space and want real cooling in a room you use every day. A portable AC makes sense when you rent, cannot drill through a wall, or need to move the unit between rooms. Portable air conditioners: flexibility at a price

A portable AC is a single box on castors with a flexible exhaust hose that vents hot air out of a window. It is real air conditioning — it uses a compressor and refrigerant, and it dehumidifies — so it will cool a closed room in a way an air cooler cannot.

Two things hold it back. First, the compressor is inside the room with you, so it is noticeably louder than a split unit. Second, it is less efficient by design: it pulls in room air to cool the condenser, then throws that air outside, which creates a slight negative pressure that draws warm air in from elsewhere in the apartment. In practice you get less cooling per watt than a split of the same rated capacity.

Where a portable earns its place is flexibility. There is no installation, no landlord conversation and no technician. You can wheel it from the bedroom at night to the living room during the day. Air coolers: cheap, low-power, and often misunderstood

An air cooler — sometimes called a desert cooler or evaporative cooler — is not an air conditioner. It has no compressor and no refrigerant. It pulls air through a wet filter pad, and the water evaporating out of that pad absorbs heat, so the air leaving the unit is cooler and wetter than the air going in.

That mechanism has two consequences. On the plus side, an air cooler uses roughly as much electricity as a large fan — a fraction of what any AC draws. It runs comfortably on a generator or a solar setup, needs no installation, and costs a fraction of an AC to buy.

On the minus side, it adds humidity to the room. In a sealed, already-humid space, that makes things feel worse, not better. Air coolers work best where air can move through — a balcony, a shop entrance, a kitchen with a window open, a large open room — and in drier inland heat rather than on the humid coast. If you close the windows with an air cooler running, you will end up in a damp, warm room.

• Rented apartment, or a room where installation is impossible: portable AC. Accept the noise and the efficiency loss in exchange for zero installation.
• Limited power budget, or an open space like a balcony or shop front: air cooler. Cheap to buy, cheap to run, and effective where air moves.
